As President & CEO of Asymmetrica (website: www.asymmetrica.net), Dr. Vanessa Neumann devises strategies for her Fortune 100 clients to dismantle illicit trade. For two years, Dr. Neumann served as sub-chair at the High-Level Risk Forum Task Force on Charting Illicit Trade at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Her work for government and law enforcement has encompassed INTERPOL, the Asymmetric Warfare Group, the US State Department, and the US Defense Department. Notably, she edited and reviewed the teaching and reference text for the US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) on counterinsurgency in Colombia.
She received her Ph.D. in political philosophy from Columbia University for her dissertation: The Autonomy and Legitimacy of States: A Critical Approach to Foreign Intervention, under the tutelage of Rawlsian protégé Thomas Pogge. From 2005 to 2007, Dr. Neumann was Assistant Professor of political philosophy at Hunter College of the City University of New York, while consulting for the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) on armed conflict in Colombia and working again with Prof. Thomas Pogge at the Center for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics (CAPPE) in Canberra, Australia, on the alleviation of extreme poverty.
Her current academic work encompasses positions at two Ivy League universities and one think tank. Dr. Neumann is a Corresponding Fellow at Yale University’s Global Justice Program, an Associate of the University Seminar on Latin America at the Institute of Latin American Studies (ILAS) at the School of International and Public affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University. She is also a Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, in both their Program on National Security and their Center for the Study of Terrorism.
She has spoken at Columbia University, Yale University, Princeton University, Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and is a routine speaker at the National Defense University (NDU) at Fort Lesley McNair in Washington, DC on crime-terror pipelines and the importance of stemming illicit trafficking as a counter-terrorist and counter-insurgency strategy. She has also spoken at many US military bases around the world.
Dr. Neumann has also worked in corporate planning and corporate finance for a multinational conglomerate in Caracas. A native Venezuelan, Dr. Neumann has been a journalist in Caracas, London and the United States.
